Caesar Metz (1823-1895), studied at the Städel in Frankfurt from 1838-1843 and went to Munich in 1844. On a trip to Italy in 1852-1853 he joined the German-Roman painter Ernst Willers. Large, Italian panoramic landscape with southern Italian topography. The painting, executed in the typical brown-green tones of late Romanticism, shows in the foreground a plain enclosed by bizarre rocks, where a swineherd is resting with his herd.
