each of baluster form, decorated with gadrooned panels, the rim with gadroon and foliate decorated apron, removable insert with gadrooned rim, two vertically aligned handles of scrolled decoration, raised on a gadroon decorated pedestal foot, each engraved twice with the crest and motto of James Campbell-Brodie, Esquire, of Lethen and Coulmony, in the counties of Moray and Nairn, Scotland, 31cm diameter over the handles, 24cm in height Footnote: James Campbell-Brodie (1801-1857) was from a distinguished family of Scottish landed gentry. His linage can be traced back as far as Malcolm, Thane of Brodie, who lived during the reign of Alexander III of Scotland (1246-1285). His father, Thomas Brodie (1760-1825) was Writer to the Signet, as was his grandfather, Thomas Brodie (1707-1770) who was also Lyon Depute of Scotland. His great-grandfather, Alexander Brodie (1667-1725), was Lord Lyon of Scotland. He bears his paternal arms of Brodie with part of the arms of Campbell of Calder, (now Earls of Cawdor) from whom he was descended by his great-grandmother, Jean Sophia Campbell, (1672-1727), daughter of Sir Hugh Campbell of Calder, 15th Thane of Cawdor (1635-1716).
