FOLLAND MANAGING DIRECTOR FOLLAND AIRCRAFT LTD 1937-1951 AS A TOKEN OF ESTEEM FROM HIS FELLOW DIRECTORS', signed to the underside,12cm in height, 22.5ozt Footnote: Henry Phillip Folland OBE was an aircraft designer and Managing Director of the Folland Aircraft Company. Folland Aircraft, formerly British Marine Aircraft Limited was formed in 1937 and began aircraft assembly at Hamble, Near Southampton, England, making parts for Bristol Blenheim and Beaufort bombers. Follands also made 15,000 rear portions out of the 22,000 constructed for the Supermarine Spitfire and later took on sub-contract work making parts for Mosquito and Wellington bombers. Henry Folland retired in 1951 due to ill health, and died three years later. in 1955 the company became noted for the production of the Folland Mirage and also the Folland Gnat, an advanced training aircraft for the RAF which were also used by the 'Red Arrows' display team. In 1959 Folland was acquired by Hawker Siddeley who dropped the Folland name, and later they became part of British Aerospace (BAe)
