A Rare Khmer Sandstone Figure of Ganesha PRE-ANGKOR PERIOD, CIRCA 8TH CENTURY 吳哥(約八世紀) 砂岩象鼻天 depicted standing, well-carved in relief wearing a short dhoti with secured with tied sash beneath the curve of a round belly, the face with a cheerful grimace between wide flapping ears, and the trunk arching to grasp for sweets held in the left hand. Height 14 in., 35.5 cm. Property from a New England Collection Indian and Southeast Asian Art, Christie's New York, 21 March 2007, sale 1812 lot 269 Property of a Private Manhattan Collection Indian and Southeast Asian Art, Christie's New York, 20 March 2001, sale 2001 lot 174 Though depictions of Ganesha from this period are rare, a similar example formerly in the Pan-Asian collection can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, acc. no. 1982.220.7. Another example held by the Art Institute of Chicago, ref. 2016.418, is similarly complete as the present lot, though shorter.
