HENRI SCHÄFER (1883-1916), FRENCH CAEN, NORMANDY; LISIEUX, NORMANDY Pair of oils on canvas; each signed lower right, each signed "H. Schäfer" with copyright and each titled in pen and ink verso 16 ins x 12 ins; 40.6 cms x 30.5 cms Provenance: Property of Mary Louise Cageorge, July 18, 1964 inscribed in pen and ink on top of The Cooling Galleries gallery label verso; The Cooling Galleries Ltd., London & Toronto gallery label verso; Estate of W.A. Ross MacFadden, Toronto; Note: A Victorian-era artist who painted town and city scenes and cathedral interiors in Belgium, Germany, and France. Henri Schäfer’s paintings have often been misattributed to the British artist, Henry Thomas Schafer. The “Dictionnaire critique et documentaire des peintres…,” by Emmanuel Bénézit, merged the artists together, allowing for confusion in today’s art market between these very distinctive artists. The W.A. Ross MacFadden Estate collection includes two lots by this popular French artist of continental town scenes. Mr. MacFadden purchased his fine collection of paintings over the years, one by one, from only top galleries and international auctions, including many from the prominent Cooling Galleries Ltd., Toronto including this lot and lot 3. His town scenes, with many small figures occupying the streets and lined with landmarks and recognizable store fronts executed in great detail, were often sold as pairs in matching frames, a quality of collecting that appealed very much to MacFadden. Estimate: $1,000—1,500
