A RED-OVERLAY YELLOW GLASS 'BAJIXIANG' VASE, MID-QING China, 18th century. The heavy, thick-walled vase is carved through the red outer layer to the golden-yellow body with the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajjixiang) - Pair of Fish, Victory Banner, Wheel of Dharma, Parasol, Lotus, Endless Knot, Treasure Vase, and Conch Shell. The waisted neck with a band of stiff leaves above a dotted band and intertwined ribbons suspending tasseled discs at the shoulder, the foot with a band of lappets. Provenance: From a Dutch private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, few minuscule nicks to foot, occasional light scratches, slightly tilted. Clague Collection, which is illustrated by C. Brown and D. Rabiner in Chinese Glass of the Qing Dynasty, 1644-1911, Phoenix Art Museum, 1987, pp. 32-33, no. 29, where it is dated as “probably of the period”.
