A CIZHOU SGRAFFIATO 'LOTUS' STEM CUP, SONG TO YUAN DYNASTY China, 960-1368. The sturdily potted, deep rounded sides rising from a spreading foot to an everted rim. Boldly carved through the brown slip down to the white ground with overlapping petals, the larger enclosing lotus flowers. The brown slip stops irregularly above the foot, revealing the white slip which also partly covers the interior, all under a clear glaze. The lower half of the foot is left unglazed and burnt orange in the firing. Provenance: From a private estate in New York City, USA. Condition: Good condition with minor old wear and firing flaws, the rim with minute fritting and one chip with an old kintsugi repair.
