A TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE 'DAYAZHAI' BOWL, GUANGXU PERIOD China, 1875-1908. Delicately potted, the rounded sides rising from a short ring foot to an everted rim. The exterior finely painted in bright enamels with a bird perched on a branch of wisteria beside flowering branches of pink roses, all on a pale turquoise-ground with a narrow gilt band above the foot. The base with an iron-red four-character mark. Inscriptions: Below the rim: 'Dayazhai' (Studio of Great Elegance). Oval seal mark: 'Tiandi yijia chun' (heaven and earth enjoying spring as one). To base: 'Yongqing changchun' (eternal joy and everlasting spring). Provenance: The estate of Roger E. Birch (1936-2020), Washington, D.C., USA. Thence by descent within the same family. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, such as expected dark spots and pitting, wear to gilt, particularly to the rim where only traces remain.
