A CELADON AND RUSSET JADE 'PEBBLE' SNUFF BOTTLE, MID-QING DYNASTY China, 18th century. Smoothly polished and well hollowed, keeping the natural irregular shape of the pebble, the translucent celadon stone accented with delicate shades of russet skin as well as russet veins and icy inclusions. Provenance: From the private collection of David Widdicombe QC. Thence by descent within the same family. David Graham Widdicombe (1924-2019) was a British Queen's Counsel and political activist. He studied at Cambridge before being called up to serve in the British Army for the remainder of World War II. While at Cambridge, he became close friends with Lee Kuan Yew, the long-serving prime minister and founding father of Singapore. Condition: Very good condition with only minor old wear, the stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks over time.
