Boris Valentinovich Scherbakov (France, Russian Federation, 1916 - 1996) Oil on board painting of the Church of St. John, Rostov Kremlin Russia. Oil on board. Signed and dated lower right. With Hammer Gallery label, other gallery labels verso. The church of St. John the Evangelist is built into the outer wall at the west gate of the Rostov Kremlin (fortress). Partially shown in the painting adjacent to the church is the Red Palace, which was used by Peter the Great, and later by Catherine the Great. In the year 1933 at the age of 17 years old, Scherbakov began his formal education at the Russian Fine Art Academy. He studied with important Russian artist Isaac Israelevitch Brodsky 1883 - 1938, Vladimir Yakovlev 1934 - 1998, and P. Shukhmin. In 1952, he was awarded the USSR State Award for taking part in creating the painting “Session of the Presidium", of the Scientific Academy of the USSR together with several artists and for a series of portraits of scientists. In 1973 he was selected as a corresponding member of the Art Academy of the USSR. Scherbakov was awarded the titles “Honored Artist of Russia” in 1976; "People’s Artist of Russia” 1981; and “People’s Artist of the USSR,” 1986. His works can be found in the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, several regional museums, many museums of the former USSR, in the White House and the Congress of the USA, in the British Royal family.
