MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE NILE AT LUXOR Inscribed with intitials, inscribed and dated 1879 on old label verso, oil on canvas (11.5cm x 25.5cm (4.5in x 10in)) Note: This work belongs to a series of studies Corbet painted while sailing up the Nile in the winter of 1878-9 and was perhaps given to Vereker and Lilian Hamilton, fellow students at the Slade. It was painted between 5:30 and 6 pm, which testifies the significance the artist placed on the immediate impression of a landscape. Stylistically, it displays affinity with the views on the Nile that Frederic Leighton painted in 1868, which likely stems from the fact that Corbet had been sketching with Leighton and Giovanni Costa in Perugia only a few months before his trip to Egypt. The study is equally reminiscent, particularly in the bluish hue of the mountains, of the Extensive View of the Nile painted most likely in 1888 by George Howard (Castle Howard, Yorkshire), 9th Earl of Carlisle and a close associate of both Costa and Leighton.
