MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE MOUNTAINS OF URBINO FROM PERUGIA Inscribed with initials, inscribed on old label verso, oil on canvas (9cm x 40.5cm (3.5in x 15.875in)) Note: Corbet painted this study in September 1881, most likely in the company of Frederic Leighton and Giovanni Costa who both stayed there at the time. The emphatically elongated format of this mountainous view is distinctly ‘Etruscan’ and was evidently influenced by Costa’s teachings. The undulating outline of the foreground hill steeped in lush green is dramatically backdropped by the sfumato-enveloped mountains in the distance, which adds to the impression of aerial perspective. The treatment of the mountains is reminiscent of Leighton’s studies of the Turkish coast of 1867, while the emphatically upward brushwork of the sky which evokes heat vapour is comparable with Leighton’s Egyptian studies of 1868.
