Samuel Henry Alken (British, 1810-1894) Three Cups, High Street, Colchester inscribed 'H Alken' (lower right) oil on canvas 38 x 64cm Provenance: Landwade Hall, Exning, Suffolk Footnote: Opened in 1701, the New White Hart and Three Cups was a coaching inn at Colchester which sat on the main route between London and the port of Harwich. Coaches ran daily through the town and the inn became an important stop for travellers heading to the Continent. Lord Nelson visited the Three Cups in 1801, as did the Prince Regent in 1813, and the Duke of Wellington in 1823. The inn closed its doors in 1965 and was demolished in 1968.
