A thangka of Shakyamuni Buddha and the Sixteen Elders or Arhats dating from the 19th century. Shakyamuni sits in dhyanasana with his right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and his left hand holding a bowl. He is backed by a lotus mandorla, and he sits on a throne supported by snow lions and flanked by two students, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. The bottom of the thangka features the Four Guardian or Heavenly Kings. The sixteen elders as well two attendants, Dharmata and Hvashang, are arranged around Shakyamuni Buddha, each labeled in gold Tibetan script. The back of the thangka is blank. It is mounted on a silk backing. Dimensions are: 32 1/2 inches tall X 23 1/2 inches wide, 82.6 cm X 59.7 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is significant wear and paint loss to one half of the painting. Provenance: From a private collection in Lorton, Virginia. The collector has been restoring antiques for over 50 years in the Washington, D.C. area.
