Dame Laura Knight RA RWS, British 1877-1970 - St Ives Harbour, 1912; watercolour on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Laura Knight 1912', 48 x 33 cm (ARR) Provenance: with James Bourlet & Sons, London, no.1801 (according to the label on the reverse of the frame); private collection until 1991; thence by descent, with another watercolour on paper by the same artist from the same collection, ‘Mousehole, 1923’, that was sold by Roseberys, London, 15th March 2011, lot 913 Note: Laura Knight was a key figure in the English Impressionist movement in the early 20th century, and a central member of the Newlyn School alongside her husband Harold Knight, Alfred Munnings, and Lamorna Birch. Knight gained acknowledgement for her work in her lifetime, in 1936 becoming the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy, and also becoming the first female artist to have a retrospective at the RA in 1965. Knight’s work has been exhibited at a number of prominent galleries, including at Leicester Galleries, Manchester City Art Gallery, the Fine Art Society, and the Barbican Art Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, where her famous self-portrait is held.
