His work was featured in exhibitions at the John Berggruen Gallery and the Tyler Museum of Art. He was well known for his depictions of landscapes around Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, and Egypt. His style shows the influence of the celebrated Victorian landscape painter -- Benjamin Williams Leader. Bates exhibited at the Royal Academy (R.A.) between 1863 and 1893.The record sold price for this artist in auction is USD $22,418 for, "The Fishing Lesson", which was sold at Christie's South Kensington in 2006.
