An early 20th century French 950 standard silver entrée dish (légumier), Paris circa 1910 probably by Jules Rayel (reg. 1883) Of rounded circular form with lobing, upon circular foot. Twin scroll shell form handles, the pull-off domed lid with a compressed circular know with four scallop shell and a reeded calyx. The front of body engraved with initials in cypher VAA. Marked to base and lid, the base also stamped RISLER. Length – 25.9 cm / 10.05 inches Weight – 1132 grams / 36.39 ozt The initials are for Victor A. Adda (Alexandria 1885-Rome 1965) he took over the family cotton trading business and formed an important collection of coins and antiquities. Following the Jewish expulsion from Egypt in 1956-57 the coins inherited by his daughters were auctioned (as "The Property of a Lady") by Christie’s on 9 October 1984 and 8 October 1985. Some Late Roman coins were offered in Bank Leu, auction 77, 11 May 2000, and the remainder of the collection now at the Israel Museum. He owned an island in the delta which was excavated Arthur Robert Callender (1875-1936). Thence by Descent.
