A Victorian sterling silver five-piece tea and coffee service, London 1882/85 by Martin, Hall and Co Comprising a teapot (1885), a coffee pot (1885), a bachelor teapot, a milk jug, and a twin handled sugar bowl. Each of rectangular form with out-curved re-entrant corners. The pots with ebonised handled pinned to rectangular section sockets opposite an incurved spout with curved tip. The pots with hinged domed lids surmounted by detachable knop finials, one fluted. The bodies with bright cut engraved decoration of lunettes and swags as well as saltire bands, each side with a laurel wreath cartouche one engraved with initials FCR in cursive script. Each fully and part-marked. (5) Teapot length – 27.5 cm / 11 inches Bachelor teapot length – 21.8 cm / 8.55 inches Coffee pot height – 22 cm / 8.7 inches Weight – 2124 grams / 68.29 ozt The initials are for Frances Cooper Richmond (American 1897-1988) daughter of Charles Alexander Richmond (1862-1940) and Sarah Cooper Locke (1868-1950), he the 10th president of Union College Schenectady, New York (1909-28).
