A Victorian sterling silver waiter or small salver, London 1898 by Charles Boyton Of shaped circular form with shaped cavetto edge with a beaded shell rim, all raised upon three pad feet. The field centre engraved with an impaled coat of arms in a circular cartouche within baroque style scrolls reserved with fish scales. The reverse engraved with a presentation inscription reading “Presented to Capt Portal 17th Lancers on his marriage April 12th 1899 by the servants at Malshanger. Fully marked to the reverse. Diameter – 20.5 cm / 8 inches Weight – 320 grams / 10.29 ozt The arms are for Portal impaling Littleton For Brig. General Sir Bertram Percy Portal, KCB, DSO (1866-1949) who married Hon. Margaret Louisa Littleton (1869-1945) on the 12th of April 1899. He the son of Sir Wyndham Spencer Portal, 1st Baronet (1822-1905) and Mary Jane Hicks-Beach (1828-1908). His wife the daughter of Edward George Percy Littleton, 3rd Baron Hatherton (1842-1930), the son of Lady Margaret Percy (d.1897) the daughter of George Percy, 5th Duke of Northumberland, Earl of Beverly (1778-1867), his wife Charlotte Louisa Littleton Rowley (1844-1923), the daughter of Sir William Rowley, MP, 2nd Baronet (1791-1832) and Susanna Edith Harland (1763-1850) the daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Harland, 1st Baronet (d.1783). Sir Bertram was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England. He gained the rank of officer in 1885 in the 17th Lancers. He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England. He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Madras between 1896 and 1898. He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the South African Medal with three clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1902. He was Lieutenant-Colonel and Brevel Colonel of the 17th Lancers between 1903 and 1907. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.). He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire. He fought in the First World War, he was mentioned in despatches. He was Commander of the Reserve Cavalry Regiment between 1916 and 1916. He was Commander of the Cavalry Brigade between 1916 and 1918 at France. He gained the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General in 1919. He was chairman of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Territorial Army Association between 1925 and 1938. He held the office of County Councillor (C.C.) for Hampshire between 1932 and 1942. He held the office of Vice-Lieutenant of Hampshire between 1932 and 1942. He was the Governor between 1934 and 1944 at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England. He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1937. He held the office of County Alderman (C.A.) of Hampshire in 1943.
