A George III sterling silver cream pail, London 1768 possibly by William Garrard (first reg. 1 April 1735) Of circular bucket form with an everted scalloped rim, the body with bands to resemble coopering. The underside with contemporaneous initials I over I*M in Roman script. opposable handle of pierced interlaced form. Fully marked underneath, the handle unmarked. Height – 9.8 cm / 3.9 inches Weight – 73 grams / 2.35 ozt William Garrard was apprenticed to Samuel Laundry on the 4th June 1729, then turned over to Jeffrey Griffith on the 30th March 1732 (his former masters business partner), then again to Ralph Maidman on the 26th September 1732. His freedom is unrecorded but is in line with the registration of his first mark. Second mark 21st June 1739, third mark 26 May 1749. He moved address to Noble Street on the 10th Oct 1755, and is only latterly recorded in the parliamentary report of 1772 as a haftmaker. One can presume he may have a mark in the lost 1758-1773 Largeworkers Register.
