Description

A LARGE AND DATED ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF THE SIGN OF NOVGOROD Russian, circa 1700 Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The Mother of God shown frontal, wearing a prominent gold halo, with her hands raised in prayer, on her chest the half-figure of Christ Emmanuel in a circular, rayed glory, blessing and holding a scroll. The borders showing four selected saints: Cosmas and Damian, St. Peter the Anthonite and Onouphrios of Neokastro. Finely executed with deep colours. The expressive faces delicately executed with soft earthly tones. The background and border stripped to gesso, partially restored. 52 x 44.2 cm. Onuphrios der Große. Der ikonographische Typus der Gottesmutter als Orantin mit Christus The icon of the Mother of God of the Sign is one of the most venerated icons of Russia. Its history is linked with the history of Novgorod. The importance of Novgorod has certainly contributed to the fame of the icon. Starting in the 12th century the icon was the source of several miracles, the first of which took place in Novgorod. In those days the icon was called 'Znamenie', which in old Russian means 'Apparition' or 'Sign'. Prince Andrew Bogolioubski who left Kiev and took possession of Vladimir, arrived with his army at the walls of Novgorod. The besieged had no other defense than calling on the Mother of God for protection. The here offered icon is a finely painted copy of the icon dated to the mid-12th century.GROSSFORMATIGE IKONE MIT DER GOTTESMUTTER DES ZEICHENS (ZNAMENIE) VON NOWGOROD Russland, um 1700 Holztafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Nimben vergoldet. 52 x 44,2 cm.
