Following Jean Antoine Houdon (France 1741-1828) "George Washington" 19th century carved white marble bust Based on Houdon's original full-length bust for the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia in 1791-92. Houdon made a plaster bust before the sculpture, based on a mask made in Washington's lifetime, and his portrait was therefore considered the most accurate representation of the figure in existence.
