Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Life of Sun Yat-sen - Revolution" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands Life of Sun Yat-sen 60c Revolution stamp issued November 12, 2000. On October 10, 1911, an explosion in a house in Wuchang province, China occurred. When police investigated they discovered an arsenal of grenades and a list of members of an illegal revolutionary party. The incriminating list contained the names of important army officers stationed nearby. The policemen realized their danger and decided to join the revolt. The tri-cities of Wuhan, one of the country's most important urban areas, were taken without a shot being fired. Sun Yat-sen was traveling abroad in the United States raising financial and political support when he read of the successful revolt in a Denver newspaper. Huang Hsing, Sun's deputy, assumed command of the revolution. Across southern China, one province after another joined the movement. Remarkably, the revolution was met by little violence and bloodshed. Sun returned to China in triumph on Christmas Day, 1911. Image Size: 10.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 17.5 in. Unframed.
