Jun fine stoneware tea bowl China, Yuan (1279 - 1368) to first half of Ming dynasty (about 1500) Diameter 12.5 cm Jun fine stoneware tea bowl ( 鈞窯 ) with lavender blue suffusion glaze. Although northern Chinese Jun pottery has been counted among the wares from the Five Great Kilns of the Song Dynasty ( 五大å窯 ) since the late Ming period, along with the technically related Ru, Guan, Ding, and Ge, most of the pieces date from somewhat more recent times, the Jin, Yuan, and early Ming eras, which specifically includes the famous planters from imperial palaces. The classic lavender blue is not the actual color of the glaze per se, but is created by light refraction in countless fine bubbles. Developed during the Song period in Henan in the same ceramic centers that produced Ru fine stoneware for use by the imperial court under Huizong (1101-26), Jun pottery evolved in subsequent dynasties into a commodity that enjoyed universal popularity from the wealthy middle classes to the imperial court and became virtually mystified from the end of the Ming period.
