A Spanish gilt and polychromed wood model of Saint Isidore the Labourer, Patron Saint of Madrid, 18th century, modelled standing with head lifted, in typical dress with leather belt attached to the waist, on a plaster and wood faux marble base, with later gilt-metal halo and giltwood staff and shovel, 106cm high overall Note: Saint Isidore 'the Farmer' (from the translation of the Spanish verb 'labrar' meaning 'to plough or work the land') is the Spanish patron saint of the city of Madrid, from where this sculpture is likely to have originated.Overall in good condition with surface dirt and wear consistent with age. There are losses to two fingers of the left hand and the index finger of the right hand. Some splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, particularly the reverse of the tunic at the shoulder and the hemline, and to a lesser extent on the face. Losses to paintwork at the face , tunic, stockings, and particularly the hands. The base is carved in two parts with an open but stable joint, and there is further splitting to the wood around the plinth section of the base. Some natural wear to the attributes including the leather belt, and the spade is made up of two joined sections. A large loss of paintwork to the back of the base.
