A Goanese polychrome ivory figure of the Virgin and Child, late 17th century, the Child depicted cradled in both hands and holding a sphere, standing on a crescent moon, with integral oval base, 22cm high Provenance: The Geoffrey and Fay Elliot collection. Christie's, London, 14 December 1999, lot 4, £7475. Note: Another example of similar to the present piece is illustrated in the catalogue of A Expansao Portuguesa E A Arte Do Marfim, Lisbon, Fundaao Calouste Gulbenkian, 25 Jun. - 15 Sept. 1991, p. 55, no. 74.The polychrome is worn and chipped in areas overall, such as the folds of the drapery and the right side of the Christ Child's face and the Virgin's face.. The green base has a vertical split top to bottom at the front. It also has a wood fill to weight the sculpture.
