Born in Arona on the Lago Maggiore as the son of the Flemish artist Riccardo de Groot, Giovanni Antonio de Groot was trained as a landscape painter in Milan by Pieter Mulier the Younger, called Il Cavalier Tempesta. He first worked on Isola Bella for Vitaliano Borromeo, who promoted his move to Rome in 1668, where he became a member of Carlo Maratta's workshop. Later de Groot moved to Amsterdam (1694-98). His late work is influenced by the painting of the Milanese artists Stefano Maria Legnanino and Filippo Abbiati. Dr Marina Dell'Omo has proposed the attribution of this painting to Giovanni Antonio de Groot. It is based on a comparison with a group of drawings, probably made during his stay in Rome, which show the same conception of the figures and the same physiognomies. The colour palette of this work also reveals the tendencies of the late Baroque and can accordingly be dated to the first years of the 18th century. Dimensions 127 x 111 cm Artist or Maker Giovanni Antonio de Groot Medium Oil on canvas (relined) Provenance Italian art collection. Notes VAT: Margin scheme
