Signed lower right: A. KOESTER "In the works of Alexander Koester, who is often simply referred to as “Enten-Koester (Duck-Koester)”, we see a consistent development from a realist style to an ever more liberal and generous style of painting throughout the 1890s that deserves recognition as a German variation on Impressionism. His so-called duck paintings are not only varied and fascinating observations of these animals but also masterful depictions of the play of light and shadow on crystal clear water and shimmering stones. He uses an unusual and fresh colour palette in which violet and green tones lend unmistakeable accents to his works. Stylistically, the present work can be dated to around 1915/1920. The work is not listed in his catalogue raisonné of 1988 (R. Stein / H. Koester, Alexander Koester. Leben und Werk)." Dimensions 45.5 x 76 cm Artist or Maker Alexander Koester Medium Oil on canvas Provenance South German private ownership.
