A Mughal wooden cabinet with bone decoration of floral sprays and borders of stylised flowers, a hinged front revealing six drawers and a compartment. India 17th century. H. 26 cm. W. 46 cm. D. 28 cm. A silver plaque with engraved inscription “Bought by General Lord Wolseley at Cairo 1885”. General Sir Garnet Wolseley 1833–1913. He served in the British Army from 1852 and became an admired and influential general. He had a central role in modernizing the British army and served many places in the British empire. In 1882 he served in Egypt ending a nationalist uprising. He stayed in Egypt and headed a rescue attempt for General Charles “Chinese” Gordon and Egyptian forces at Khartoum in 1884–85, an attempt that failed. Provenance: Danish private collection. According to information, bought by owners family in London c. 1950. Thence by descent.
