A Victorian gold, diamond and enamel serpent necklace, the head and neck set with a shaped cabochon garnet with applied old-mine-cut diamond collets and rose-cut diamond three stone nostrils, suspending a matching garnet and diamond locket back heart locket, to a graduated articulated snake link necklace, c. 1840, length 40cm, in fitted case the case exterior with contemporary label, 'Carbuncles & Diamonds' The term carbuncle was first coined during the Medieval period to describe a red gem that was thought to have had magical properties. From the 19th century it was more commonly used to describe a cabochon-cut garnetMinor abrasions and scratches commensurate with age and wear, clasp secure, gross weight approximately 48 grams, diamonds bright and lively, all closed back settings, not possible to accurately grade, garnets dark brownish red, good condition in closed back settings, fitted case with scuffs commensurate with age.
