生於韓國、長駐日本的李禹煥對日本當代藝術發展貢獻良多。他的學術理論文獻與其繪畫、雕塑作品一樣備受尊崇，意義重大。當中1970年發表的文章《超越存在與虛無——論關根伸夫》乘著六十年代後期的反專制、反殖民浪潮，推動日本「物派」藝術運動的誕生。物派由李禹煥及其極簡主義藝術領軍，借助原始媒介，帶出人造物與大自然的關係。
