The extent to which Montézin’s style was indebted to the work of Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley is evident in the present work, which depicts the fleeting impression of the artist’s surroundings. It is not only in the choice of landscape that the influence of Impressionism can be seen in this work, but also in the technique employed by Montézin, with his generous application of pigment with loose brushstrokes conveying a sense of the immediacy and spontaneity which resulted from his tendency to paint en plein air. Montézin’s works are held in a number of significant collections, including those of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, the Petit Palais in Paris, and the Ulster Museum in Belfast, among many others.
