Pierre Eugène Montézin, French 1874-1946- Maisons sur la rivière; oil on panel, signed lower right, 39.5x55cm Provenance: Pillon, Calais lot 7 July 1991, lot 102; Private Collection, London Note: Pierre Eugène Montézin was a significant French Post-Impressionist painter. The extent to which Montézins style was indebted to the work of Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley is evident in the present work, which depicts the fleeting impression of the artists surroundings. It is not only in the choice of landscape that the influence of Impressionism can be seen in this work, but also in the technique employed by Montézin, with his generous application of pigment with loose brushstrokes conveying a sense of the immediacy and spontaneity which resulted from his tendency to paint en plein air. Montézins works are held in a number of significant collections, including those of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, the Petit Palais in Paris, and the Ulster Museum in Belfast, among many others.
