Beckmann rejected the tendency towards extreme abstraction which defined the work of many of his contemporaries, instead continuing to practice and promote figurative art, to which the present piece bears witness. Beckmann enjoyed significant success in 1920s and 30s Germany, and was the subject of retrospectives in Mannheim, Basel, and Zurich. His works were also acquired by the National Gallery in Berlin.
