Marcel Delmotte, Belgian 1901-1984- Femme nue, 1959; oil on board, signed and dated 1959 lower right; signed Marcel Delmotte and dated 1959 on the reverse, 46x61cm(ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, London Note: The present work is by the twentieth-century Belgian artist Marcel Delmotte. Delmotte was largely self-taught, aside from his attendance at the Université de Travail in his hometown of Charleroi. He went on to work as an interior decorator, an experience which informed many of his later artistic endeavours. Delmottes output was undoubtedly shaped by the work of earlier painters, such as Piero della Francesca, Poussin, and Caravaggio, alongside contemporary surrealists such as Dalí and Magritte. Delmotte refused to align himself with any particular artistic movement or school, with his combination of widely-ranging artistic influences creating a highly idiosyncratic style which defined his work. Delmottes output was prolific and varying, ranging from biblical, figurative, and abstract compositions to strong geometric statements, made in multiple mediums. His work was regularly exhibited at the Galerie Isy Brachot in Brussels, but has also been displayed around the world, including in New York and Tokyo, with a significant international exhibition held in 1991. Works by Delmotte are held in the collections of the Modern Art Museum in Munich, and the Maurice Carême Museum in Anderlecht, among others. Please refer to department for condition report
