Francis Bott, German 1904-1998- Composition No.10, 1959; gouache, signed and dated 59 lower left, 51x40cm(ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, London. Note: Beginning his artistic career in the 1930s, Bott was encouraged to paint by the likes of Oskar Kokoschka and Francis Picabia. His works from the 1930s and 1940s are dominated by the surrealist styles that were so prevalent in Europe during the period, and exhibited works at the 1947 Gallerie Maeght Surrealist Show organised by Andre Breton and Marcel Duchamp. By 1948 his works transitioned more to abstraction and by the mid-1950s he was much in demand, exhibiting alongside Ben Nicholson at the Kunsthaus, Zurich in 1955. Bott's style sits across two categories within the 20th century art scene; surrealism and geometric abstraction, his works in both areas are accomplished and the present work was executed during the latter phase. Please refer to department for condition report
