扳指在古代叫韘，《说文》曰：「韘，射也」，是射箭时套在右手拇指上，以保护射手右拇指不被弓弦勒伤的专用器物。有清一代，各种规制日趋完善，搬指虽小却也是森严等级的一种象征，多以玉石、翡翠、玛瑙、珊瑚等名贵材料制作的搬指，非皇室贵胄一般人是不敢也不能随意佩戴的。
扳指的大小厚薄，依使用者文武身份定夺，武搬指多素面，文搬指多于外壁精刻诗句或花纹，此件拍品即属文扳指，且雕刻御题诗文，为帝王赏玩之物，故更为精美。
