Pencil on thin paper, c. 1950, signed 'Calder' lower left. 10 3/8 x 8 in. (sheet), unframed. Note: This work was recently reviewed by the Calder Foundation and assigned archive number A29541. Simon Schmiderer, from whose estate this drawing (and the following two lots) comes, was an architect. Schmiderer likely met Alexander Calder while working for the firm Harrison and Abramovitz on the United Nations. Schmiderer worked on the General Assembly Building from 1947 to 1950. Calder did not design a work for the UN at the time of construction, but the two men frequented the same circles in New York. The Calder Foundation is currently researching these works. Condition Report The sheet with irregular edges. A pale stain upper left. Other pale staining showing mostly at top. Creasing at top. A small foxmark center right. Otherwise in good condition. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale. Provenance The artist; Simon Schmiderer; Thence by descent.
