Joseph Henry Boston (American, 1860-1954), River Nocturneoil on board, monogrammed at lower right, presented in a later frame.Board 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in.; Frame dimensions 20 1/2 x 18 1/2 in.Originally from Connecticut, Joseph Henry Boston is most closely associated with New York. At the age of 15, he enrolled in the antique class at the National Academy of Design school in 1875. He first exhibited at the Academy's annual in 1884, and would be included in a total of fifty-eight annual exhibitions. Boston is best known for his society portraits and impressionist landscapes.
