(Chiasso, Switzerland) after the original painting with permission of the artist's estate, with purchase receipt, some seams open, some small bald areasProvenance: Aquired at auction in France on 23.03.1997; private collectionAs a member of the influential "Blauer Reiter" group, the German-Dutch artist Heinrich Campendonk was one of the leading representatives of Rhenish Expressionism. He became a teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Essen in 1923 and professor of glass painting, mural painting, mosaics and tapestry weaving at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1926. However, as a result of Adolf Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor on 30th January 1933, he was dismissed and emigrated to the Netherlands via Belgium in 1934. His paintings were later defamed as "degenerate art" under the Nazis. Campendonk already enjoyed great success as an artist in the Netherlands during the war and remained in Amsterdam until the end of his life, where he died a renowned artist in 1957.Campendonk enjoyed experimenting with different artistic techniques and, in addition to his paintings, is especially known for his stained glass. His graphic and colourful compositions were ideally suited for transfer to large-format murals or stained glass windows. For example here his circa 1919 oil painting "In the Forest", now in the Detroit Institute of Arts, was reproduced as a tapestry by VH Muhely Art in the 1980s with the permission of the artist's estate. The tapestry differs from the painting, which measures approximately 84 cm x 99 cm, firstly in its size and secondly in the use of a more muted colour palette.
