Description

Of typical shape, displaying stylised pine trees growing along a shore line and waves in takamakie, hiramakie, inlays of mother-of-pearl and a lead-gray material on a fundame ground. Fundame to the inside. Original wooden box, the inscription on the lid reading: Korin sha matsuba makie natsume (copy after Korin, pines and waves in makie natsume) and the reverse of the lid signed Komin and sealed Harui Komin. Paper cover of the lid with a similar inscription and a white silk cloth with woven origami cranes. Harui Kômin (1869-after 1937) was born into a family of lacquer artists in Osaka. His father died when Komin was still a boy, so he studied under his father's pupil Nakagawa Gyokushu. On invitation of the art dealer Ikeda Seisuke he moved to Kyoto in 1888 where he studied Ikeda's collection of old lacquer. In consequence his skill improved and many of his objects were sold by Ikeda to foreign museum and collectors. After Ikeda closed his business in 1911 Kômin moved to Suma. He is considered along with Shirayama Shôsai as one of the great lacquer artists of the Meiji period.
