Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Circa 900 AD. A bronze chape for a sword's scabbard, heater-shaped with lug to the point and scooped upper edges; to each broad face a low-relief design of a stylised wolf. Very fine condition. Mounted on a custom-display stand. Cf. Paulsen, P. Schwertortbänder der Wikingerzeit, Stuttgart. The sword was one of the most potent symbols of the Viking Age, the outward sign of a warrior. Many viking scabbard tips ,or chapes have been found; however in a poor state of preservation. This example is in near perfect condition. A small amount of green patinated evident. For another example of a bronze Viking scabbard see The British Museum. Accession number: 1997,0102.1. Size: L:90mm / W:40mm ; 45.3g. Provenance: From a private collection; previously was acquired from G. M. in London in 2017.
