A LACQUER SUZURIBAKO DEPICTING BAMBOO
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). The rectangular suzuribako (writing box) with a brown-lacquered exterior, the cover finely lacquered in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e depicting bamboo stalks. The inside of the cover shows a beautiful reddish nashiji ground. The interior with further nashiji, a tray and a compartment containing the original suzuri (ink stone), and a copper suiteki (water dropper).
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, surface scratches and minor notches and nicks here and there, the cover with a small crack.
