Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
The finely carved and incised stag antler netsuke depicting the ancient Japanese hero Hadesu straddling a tiger lying on its back, wearing a full suit of armor, showing a fierce facial expression, and killing the tiger with his sword.
This netsuke possibly may be referring to the story of Ino Hayata and the mythical Nue.
