A PAIR OF MING DYNASTY ‘BUDDHIST LION’ DISHES, MUSEUM PROVENANCE
China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The body with lobed rounded sides rising from a short foot to a broad everted barbed rim, painted in underglaze blue on light celadon ground. Depicted are mythical creatures in an abstract manner, resembling Buddhist lions.
Condition: Good condition, one dish with loss to the glaze on the rim, both dishes with manufacturing flaws such as pitting, traces of use, and crazing in the glaze.
Provenance: Form an Austrian private collection. Both plates with labels from the National Museum of The Philippines Manila, one with identifiable registration number: WO-494 243.
