China, 20th century. Finely potted with a slightly tapered foot rising to deep rounded sides, the outer wall painted with a continuous scene of the hongs at Canton by the Pearl River, the factories bearing the French, Imperial Austrian, Swedish, British, Dutch and Danish flags, the paved waterfront bustling with European and Chinese figures, the interior painted with the flag of Britain flying beside its hong and junks in the harbor within an elaborated border, all underneath a lavish band of downward lappets at the inner cavetto, outlined in gilt and painted in various vivid tones.
The Hongs at Canton as a decoration on Chinese export porcelain became popular from about 1765 onwards.
