A PAIR OF IMARI-PLATES WITH BROCADE ORNAMENT
Japan, 19th century
Very attractive impressively colorful pair of plates! In back of each is a Ho (phoenix), noteably reduced to a circular surface, with flaming tail and bushes from throat. Delicately painted tendril with kiku blossoms all around. The major pictoral area is many-faceted – bamboo framed fields, also kiku (chrysanthemum) with vines and picture window with view of trees etc. On bottom are blue painted vines in the manner of Chines. Xiangcao. The painting technique differs – blue underglaze, enamel color, rich iron oxide red and much gold! Sign of Nianhao from China (here Ming/Chenghua) on the bottom of each.
DIAMETER 40.8 cm
Condition: Good condition.
Provenance: From the private collection of Robert W., acquired 1950´s – 1980´s.
