Emperor Khai Dinh's Wucai Glazed Jar W/Imperial Dragon & Fenghuang Motif (From a Vietnamese Royal Family) - This porcelain jar is elaborately decorated in the wucai style with an ornate scene of an imperial dragon and fenghuang (phoenix) amid a background of stylized clouds and smoke wisps. The dragon is depicted with five claws becae the piece was made for an emperor, as pieces made for nobility were depicted with five claws while pieces made for the public depicted the dragons with four claws or less. The fenghuang is a symbol of high virtue and grace, and is said to represent power sent from the heavens to the Empress. The bottom of the piece bears a four character Zhengde reign mark. This piecees from the estate of a Vietnamese Royal Family (the family now lives in the United States, and wishes to remain private as they still have relatives living in Vietnam). According to our seller, this piece was kept in the personal collection of the 12th Nguyen Emperor Khai Dinh.
