Silver Cup with Boar Handle, Concurrent with the Han Dynasty (c. 1st century CE). Cups with rounded bottoms have been attributed to both the Scythian and Sarmatian cultures, for who the vessels appear to have had ritual significance. Whether crafted from precious metal or simple wood, zoomorphic handles appear on many of the round bottom cups which have been found throughout Eurasia. It is theorized that the animal was positioned facing the rim of the vessel in order to protect the contents of the cup. Animal imagery was extremely popular among both the Scythian and Sarmatian cultures, and can be see in much of their art. Among many cultures, animals have been worshipped for their more admirable qualities.
