"In these new prints, Kelly - after first deciding upon the paper dimension - starts with a carefully constructed line drawing and/or collage to make some approximation of structure and color relationships. Sometimes inked-up pieces of paper are cut and positioned. But in each case, only when the relationships have been determined are the inks mixed and the prints proofed. Thus in making the final lithograph the reciprocity of the parts is established by trial and error with a series of meticulous adjustments. And very often on completion of the proofing Kelly readjusts and re-establishes the margins."
