A Victorian ebonised and painted wood truncheon, decorated with 'VR above the arms of Grantham (Checky or and azure within a border sable charged with silver trefoils) and letters / G S / C (Grantham Special Constabulary), and with ribbed handle, 41cm longThe chequers are the arms of the Warennes, to which the border was added for difference. William de Warenne, a kinsman of the Conqueror, was by him created Earl of Surrey, and he and his successors were granted lands in Surrey, Ssex, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire. The Warenne arms, gold and blue chequers, are accordingly found in the insignia of a number of towns, including Grantham.Street's History of Grantham states: There is an ancient military or knight's mace in the town, said to have been once in the keeping of the Corporation, along the haft of which the trefoil or ivy leaf is worked. It is an object of very great interest, a relic of ancient armoury; two feet two inches in length, and weighs between three and four pounds; made of iron, the head having seven projecting flanges, each terminating in a spike; one of these has been broken off, and the next bent, evidently by a blow.
